UEFA Champions League Guide 2026

The most prestigious club competition in world football. Here is everything you need to understand the new format, qualification, and what it takes to lift the trophy in May.

What Is the UEFA Champions League?

The UEFA Champions League is Europe's premier club football competition, bringing together the best teams from across the continent's domestic leagues. Founded as the European Cup in 1955, it was rebranded as the Champions League in 1992 — the same year the Premier League launched — and has grown into the most-watched annual sporting event after the FIFA World Cup.

For the 2024-25 season, UEFA introduced a major format overhaul: the traditional group stage was replaced by a 36-team league phase. This change was designed to create more high-profile matches earlier in the competition and reduce predictable outcomes that often occurred when stronger clubs were drawn into weaker groups.

Winning the Champions League is widely considered the highest achievement in club football. It opens doors to the FIFA Club World Cup, delivers transformative prize money, and cements a club's place among the European elite.

The New Format Explained

League Phase (Sep - Jan)

36 clubs each play 8 matches against 8 different opponents selected by seeded draw. Home and away distribution is balanced. After 8 matchdays, clubs are ranked in a single standings table based on points.

Playoff Round (Feb)

Teams finishing 9th through 24th enter a two-legged playoff. Winners advance to the Round of 16. This phase adds crucial knockout drama and a second chance for clubs that narrowly missed automatic qualification.

Round of 16 (Mar)

The top 8 league phase finishers plus 8 playoff winners contest two-legged ties. The draw seeds league phase top-8 clubs against playoff round winners to avoid repeat matchups.

Quarterfinals & Semifinals (Apr-May)

Eight clubs contest the quarterfinals. The four winners advance to the semifinals. Both rounds are two-legged, played over two legs with aggregate scores determining who progresses.

The Final (Late May)

A single match at a pre-selected neutral venue decides the European champion. If scores are level after 90 minutes, extra time and a penalty shootout determine the winner.

How Clubs Qualify

UEFA allocates Champions League spots to domestic leagues based on the UEFA country coefficients, which measure historical performance of clubs from each nation in European competitions. The bigger the coefficient, the more automatic berths a country receives.

England (Premier League)4-5 clubs
Spain (La Liga)4-5 clubs
Germany (Bundesliga)4 clubs
Italy (Serie A)4 clubs
France (Ligue 1)3 clubs
Other leagues1-3 clubs

Clubs can also qualify via the Europa League: the winner of the UEFA Europa League earns automatic entry into the Champions League the following season, regardless of their domestic league finish.
